Made by Man

The exhibition "Made By Man" created by the artist J. Casey Doyle was a remarkable made up of about 7 pieces and they were nothing short of outstanding. The pieces were made out of synthetic ribbon, like you would put on presents and make pom-poms out of. These pieces of art were all made of very bright, vibrant colors that would be aesthetically pleasing to just about anyone. They were all made by knotting the different strands of ribbon together and hung on the wall for everyone to view them.
Interpretetting these different pieces was hard for me to do, just like all the different pieces we have seen and looked at. But, if i had to interpretate them, i would have to say that he was maybe trying to say that one can make something, art, out of anything as long as you have the want to attitude. These ribbons are very fragile and they rip/ fall apart fairly easily. When i first saw the pieces, i thought that they were just woven blankets, or maybe some type of fabric. But, upon further review, i notice that they were fragile ribbons woven into a series of knots to for some sort of fabric. To say what it means to its maker is not for me, nor anyone else, to decide or determine. It is truly up to the artist to say what it means to him. We were not there when he made the piece, so we do not know exactly what it means to him. This piece changes my thought process because when i saw this piece i realized that anyone can make something out of anything. The sky really is the limit, if you set your mind to it.
In conclusion, i want to say that this exhibition was a remarkable one. This artist did an outstanding job with presenting his work for us, as students, and for everyone else to enjoy. This show was interesting, mind blowing, and just outright amazing. Even though this class is over, I am looking forward to seeing what is next to come into the gallery.

Artist Review

Banksy

                I was told to write a contemporary artist review on a photographer whom I was interested in. I could not find a “photographer” whom I was interested in a whole lot simply because I enjoy raw, straight forward images more. I chose to do a review on a man named Banksy. Bansky does mostly street art, what people would call graffiti. People also may call his work vandalism because he puts his work on building or other paintings. To me, graffiti is not vandalism nor should it be illegal simply because art is a way of expressing one’s self and that is one way to express yourself. Graffiti is just as much art as any of the paintings or photographs you see in a high class gallery.

                I had searched for some time to try and find any sort of information on who Banksy may be and all I could come up with was a news article from Mail Online. The article states that the reporters and crew searched far and wide for an answer of who Banksy might actually be. Some say that he is a collaboration of multiple artists and he does not truly exist. They fell upon a man whom claimed to have met him once and gave them the name Robin Gunningham. They did not know if this was him for sure, but they did find out that Robin Gunningham was an exceptional artist at a young age. They also found out, from neighbors and such, that Mr. Gunningham was also very interested in the art of graffiti. They still do not know for sure whether Robin Gunningham is truly Banksy, himself, because in all of Bansky’s interviews he has done them anonymously.

                The piece I would like to review by Bansky is entitled “Outside”. I decided to review this piece because it saw it and immediately fell in love with it. The piece showcases many different photos of his “tags”. I believe that the imagery that is represented with these pieces of art are simply take it as you wish. I could not find much on the piece, actually, I could not find any at all. I have searched online for an hour and a half and could not find anything besides a news article on who  Bansky really is. The work is presented on brick walls, sides of buildings, and anywhere else someone could put graffiti. It ranges from simple line to intricate paintings of planes and even children. They also range from small sizes to fairly large. The work is made out of strictly stencils, spray paint, and his genius imagination and his love of the art.

                My view on the body of work “Outside” is that Banksy wants to express what he is feeling at that time and place. I believe to answer “why, or how, or what does it represent” is hard because no one truly knows how they were feeling at that exact moment in time, without being there and talking to him/ her while they were making the piece. This form of art, graffiti, is more or less a social statement. A social statement the does not appeal to a lot of people. A lot of people look at graffiti and think that it is just a criminal vandalizing a wall or building. Graffiti is not really meant to solve problems or even cause them, but in today’s society graffiti mostly causes issues. This work, I believe, truly does satisfy what Bansky is trying to express or reveal because if it does not then why would he have created it? In my opinion, this work does change me a little bit simply because of the fact that he can do what he loves and still make a living. Not a lot of people can say that they absolutely love what they do.

Final Project!

This is my final project, entitled "Dreams= Money/Effort". This was a comment on how people assume that building a car just takes money or just takes a car. Those people are dead wrong. Building a car takes a car, alot of money, and alot of effort. This project was based on my ream of building a Honda Civic into a Tuner. This was created from screen shots from Andy'sAutoSports.com and with my own photography. It will be displayed as it is, no matting, special effects, or anything. I believe that photography should be taken as it is, without any special credit.

Work in Progress

My final project is going to be a commentary on the thought of someones "dream car" and the reality of how much time and money it involves. Everyone wants a dream car, built to their specs and with the colors and style they want. They all think that as long as they have enough money or the drive, they can built it with no issues. They are wrong though because there is hours, day, weeks, and months involved in building a car.
I will be posting my car, how it come off the lot, next to a series of other photos. The other photos will be objects that I would put onto my car to make it the way I dream it as. I will put the photos of the bodykit, rims, exhaust, paint, engine, and other mods next to my original car. I will post the prices of each item and the time involved in the setup of the parts.
I would love to know what you all think of my idea/ what needs improvement.

Massacre 

 

 

This fictional project was especially close to my heart because it has to do with the military. I took pictures of game play and cinematic from two different  games. The first game is Rainbow Six 3 and the next is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I took these specific photos simply because i wanted to do a commentary on what REAL warfare is like, compared to what the game designers portray it as.
  To make this project, I took photos of myself playing the same level over and over. I used manual mode on my camera, and that was especially difficult due to the fact that the lighting on the video game was constantly changing. For the other game, i watched a cinematic from a level in Modern Warfare 2. I  this one, i wanted to try and get photos of things that a very close friend of mine has personally experienced in combat.
  I decided to take photos of a copyrighted game because i wanted to show people that no matter what a game may say or do, it is nothing close to real warfare. I have talked to a close friend of mine and i have talked to him about warfare itself. What it is, what it is like, and how it affects someone. He told me straight up that no video game will EVER be able to show what real warfare is like. He said that there are some missions and such that are portrayed the same as it may have really happened, but it can never do it justice. He told me that the dropping from a chopper (shown in a picture above) is very similar, but it is a very dangerous procedure. Also, an obvious difference is, there is no "retry". If you fail a mission in real life, you are either killed or you are fired. You also only have ONE life in real warfare. So, i want to get across that Call of Duty and Rainbow Six will never be able to show what REAL warfare is. Warfare is truly hell and it is no joke. Anyone can play a video game about warfare, but it takes a certain type of person to be able to live and fight warfare in real life. 

New and Old Friends

My idea on this project was to take photos of some of my best friends, but take the majority of the pictures when they weren't looking. This worked for some photos but most of the time they realized that i was taking a photo, so they posed.
My original idea was to surprise people with a photo, but that did not work very well. I did not really organize these photos to create a message because i feel that photographs are whatever someone takes them as. To me, i can represent a photo as one thing and someone else could see it as completely different. That being said, i would much rather leave them alone and let people view it for what it is worth to them.
I created these images by using the Auto mode on my camera. I did not want to use manual mode because i felt that if i had to take the time to get a proper exposure, then they would catch on a lot faster and my project would not have come out as good.

The theme of this project was my garage. I chose this place because i spend a lot of time in here, either working on my car and bike, or just when I'm mad and just want to get away. A garage, to me, is the only place in the house where a man can make it look however he wants and not have listen to his wife/ girlfriend about cleaning and what not. The garage is a man's getaway and it's not suppose to be clean or presentable. The garage is where a man can get dirty and greasy and not have to worry about staining something.
My pictures for this assignment have digital noise in them. I made them like that on purpose because they look dirty and imperfect. Just like a garage, my pictures do not have any depth or other meaning, there are exactly what they look like.
I chose these five specific pictures simple because they define my garage. Ever single picture that you see here showcases me and my dad's garage. All of the pictures do not necessarily tie together or correlate with each other, they are just the main things that make up the garage, except for the paint gun. I put the paint gun in here because I've always loved cars and my dream is to one day build a car. The paint gun was my dad's but he recently gave it to me and soon he is going to teach me how to paint a car.
I did not do barely any editing except for histogram and i cropped one picture. My reasoning behind that is that a garage is whatever it looks like. There are no bells and whistles, there is nothing special, whatever you see is what it is.

Old News Interpretation

My favorite piece of this whole show was the piece titled "Puget Sticks". This piece was a picture of two Marine recruits at Parris Island learning how to fight with the Puget Sticks. This piece was made on a silver gelatin and was displayed in a frame. The picture was not very big but it was the perfect size for this piece. The subject matter of the Marines was presented in a good way. The Marines are known as hard and strong, and this picture showed strength and hardness.

During my interpretation i began to see myself in the picture. I began to see myself at basic. This picture is about how tough the Marine Corps really is and it represents a brotherhood and a bonding moment. This interpretation and choice of photo was very easy for me because the US Marine Corps is my dream. I loved the whole concept of the picture. With the DI and the recruits and just the whole photograph made me happy. I would really like to give Jeff Sprang some props!

Materializing New Space

I want to start off by saying that the two people that came in and talked to us were very talented and very descriptive in everything. They help us understand the entire thought process behind their work, while most other artists just tell us what they wanted to happen. This is my third art showing here at OSU Mansfield and this is definitely my favorite one, so far. The work, to me was interesting and it really made you think about what you were actually looking at. There was mystery in their art and it made me think.
There was one piece that REALLY stood out to me, and that was that big long one as soon as you walk into the gallery. I forget the name of it but, to me, forgetting the name makes it even more of a mystery. I liked this one so much because it had a sinister side to it. It was dark and creepy and a little grungy. It also kind of reminded me of one of those "ISPY" books. I used to look at those all day, and in the piece there is stuff all over the place. I actually found myself looking at the piece for different items, to see what all i could find.
My interpretation does not differ from the artists intentions, except for once concept. I did not really understand the political point in the picture. All i saw was the bird and all of the objects surrounding it. Although, i do not deny his intentions, but i did not see the political viewpoint in the picture it self.
All of my questions that i thought of were answered during the lecture. There were all answered without even having to ask the question. Overall, I feel like this is the best showing that has come to OSU Mansfield. The artists were very down to earth and their pieces were really interesting and made you actually look to see what you are seeing. Very good job to the artists.

Photo Interpretation

What i see, What it means, and how do you know.
In this photograph i see, what seems to be, a man smiling. he has white skin and also white teeth. He has a bit of peach fuzz on his upper lip but it is not a whole lot. this picture is a close up of this person's mouth as the person was smiling. There is a completely black background that makes you focus on the teeth. There are also little specs of stains on the teeth.
What i feel this photograph means is a few things. This photo could turn off some people who are neat freak and germaphobes. This photograph could also make someone feel happy and in a good mood. On the other hand, someone could also feel depressed because of this picture.
The evidence i have to support my interpretations are as the following. This may turn off a neat freak and what  not just because of the persons teeth. It kind of looks like the person has not brushed their teeth in quite some time. This may make someone happy just because of the simple fact that the person in the photograph is smiling. Some people, whenever they see a smile, even if it's a photograph, they get happy and smile too. Last but not least, This photo also may make someone sad or depressed. The background in the picture is a pure black and that is a depressing color.  Some people also may think that the smile is fake and that might make someone sad as well.

Most Memorable Photo

My most memorable photo is the one of my twin brother and I fighting over a sprinkler at my Grandma's house. We are about 3 or 4 years old and it is a very nice summer day. We are both in swim trunks and we are completely soaking wet. The sprinkler that we were fighting over was a red fire hydrant looking one with a fire fighter house coming out the side. The picture shows me spaying my brother with the fireman's house section of the sprinkler. I have a huge grin on my face, on the other hand, my twin brother does not look so happy. I could not find the picture in any albums to show. I remember so many details because my Grandma and Grandpa always talk about the picture and we have a nice laugh.
